An Empire Written in Knots
The Inca ran an empire of millions - no alphabet, no paper. They wrote the whole thing in knots.
The Inca ran an empire of millions of people - roads, armies, taxes, a full census of all of it - with no alphabet, no paper, no writing like ours. They recorded the whole thing in knotted string.
The strings are called quipu (in Quechua, khipu): dyed cords hanging off a main rope, covered in knots. And the knots are math - a base-10 number system you read by position.
How you read a knot
The code is precise. A figure-eight knot is one. A long knot - several turns cinched tight - sits in the ones place and counts two through nine. Single knots climb the cord for tens, hundreds, and thousands. And a bare stretch of cord, a deliberate gap where a knot would be? That's a zero - a positional zero, tied into string.
The math is proven cold
The Inca administrators who kept these records were the khipukamayuq, the cord-keepers. They ran an empire's warehouses and censuses on knotted cords - counting bundled textiles, jars, sacks of grain, and people. That part is not a theory. Scholars read quipu numbers today; the numeric, accounting function is definitively decoded.
And maybe more - the honest open question
Did the cords also encode names, clans, and history? This is where we tell it straight. One 2018 study by Manuel Medrano and Gary Urton matched six mid-colonial khipus from the Santa Valley to a Spanish census - and found that cord color and twist direction appeared to map to clan and moiety identity. Evidence of more than numbers. Sabine Hyland has gone further, claiming the first phonetic decipherment of a set of epistolary cords.
Both lines of work are real, published, and genuinely promising. Neither is settled. These are colonial-era examples that may reflect European contact, and no one has produced a full decipherment. So we say what's true: the numbers are proven, and whether the knots also held language is still being debated. Nobody should tell you quipu are "deciphered writing" - not yet.
An empire in string
Fewer than 1,400 quipu survive worldwide today. An entire empire recorded in knotted cord - and we're still learning to read it. Mexican by name. American by history.
