A hunting poison, not a weapon of war
Curare is prepared from Amazonian plants - Chondrodendron tomentosum and Strychnos species - and Indigenous peoples used it as a hunting poison on blowgun darts and arrows. It is knowledge of the forest, refined over generations: which vine, which resin, how to cook it down.
Here's the part that sounds impossible: the meat is safe to eat
Curare only works when it gets into the bloodstream. Swallow it, and it's harmless - which is exactly why the hunted meat is safe to eat. Indigenous hunters knew this. When the French explorer La Condamine reported it back in the 1700s, Europeans struggled to believe a poison could be deadly on a dart and harmless on a plate. But the hunters were right, and the pharmacology later proved it.
The secret hiding inside the poison
What curare actually does is relax skeletal muscle - completely. Its active principle is a compound called d-tubocurarine. A muscle that can't fire is a muscle that can't tense, twitch, or resist. In a jungle, that's how you drop your dinner. In an operating room, that turns out to be exactly what a surgeon needs.
1942, Montreal: the jungle enters the operating room
In 1942, in Montreal, Griffith and Johnson used purified curare in surgery for the first time. Suddenly surgeons could keep a body perfectly still and operate safely - the poison had become a medicine.
Now the honest caveat, because accuracy is the product: the exact drug didn't stay. Tubocurarine itself was largely replaced by synthetic muscle relaxants. So the true claim isn't "your surgeon still uses curare" - it's that Amazonian hunters opened the door to the muscle relaxants used in operating rooms right now. Derived and inspired, not unchanged.
