A Twin Aqueduct and a 16 km Dike Built the Aztec Capital

Their capital sat in a salt lake. So the Aztecs piped in fresh spring water on a twin aqueduct - and walled off the salt with a 16-kilometer dike.

Tenochtitlan - the Mexica capital - was an island city in the middle of a salt lake. Undrinkable. So how do you give a quarter-million people fresh water? You engineer it.

They ran an aqueduct from the springs of Chapultepec straight across the water and into the city. Fresh spring water, on tap, in the middle of a lake.

The genius: two channels

Here's the part that gives it away as real engineering - the aqueduct had two channels. Water flowed through one while crews cleaned and repaired the other. The city never went dry. It was rebuilt in sturdier stone masonry under Nezahualcóyotl after the flood of 1449 damaged it.

The lake was the problem

But the lake itself was a threat. Lake Texcoco was brackish - and it flooded. So they built a wall through the water.

The dike of Nezahualcóyotl - the poet-king of the allied city-state of Texcoco - ran about 16 kilometers long. A wall of earth and rock held between rows of driven wooden piles. It held back the flood and penned the salt water to the east, keeping the water around the city fresh.

A twin aqueduct and a lake split in two. That's not a village. That's a water system, five centuries ago. Mexican by name. American by history.

The Albarradón de Nezahualcóyotl was a dike about 16 km long (≈8 m high, ≈3.5 m wide), built of earth and rock held between rows of driven wooden piles, running from Atzacoalco/Tepeyac toward the south of the lake - ordered by Nezahualcóyotl of Texcoco after the 1449 flood (built ~1450s). The dike's purpose was flood control and water quality: it segregated the fresher water of the western lake (Lake Mexico, around Tenochtitlan) from the brackish/saline water of the eastern Lake Texcoco. From its construction to the Spanish conquest (~70 years) records note no flooding of Tenochtitlan from lake overflow.
